Contraception Testing

Sexual health at your local pharmacy and online

Published on:

You can get some sexual health care without visiting a clinic. Many pharmacies and online services offer testing, contraception and advice.

Introduction

This can save you time, and it is often easier to fit around your day. Pharmacists are trained to give advice in private, and they can tell you when you need to see a clinic instead.

What is on offer depends on where you live, so check with your local pharmacy or your clinic.

At your pharmacy

  • Emergency contraception
  • Condoms and advice on how to use them
  • Pregnancy tests
  • Advice if you are worried about an infection
  • Some pharmacies offer contraceptive pills or STI tests

Online

You can order a free home test kit online for most common STIs. The kit comes in plain packaging. You take your own samples and post them back. Most results arrive by text message. If a result is positive, the service will arrange treatment for you.

When to visit a clinic

Visit your clinic if you have symptoms, if a partner has an infection, if you may need PEP, or if you want a coil or implant. Tell the team if you have had a test elsewhere.

Whichever route you choose, regular testing is a good habit. Your clinic is always there if you need more help.
